Accent Obert becomes a new civic infrastructure at the service of the Catalan digital ecosystem.
Barcelona, June 3, 2025 — The .cat Foundation opens a new stage and becomes Accent Obert, a renewed identity that expands and adapts its mission to the current challenges of Catalan in the digital age. The name change reflects a more open and collaborative way of working, while maintaining its longstanding goal: to be useful to the Catalan-speaking community in the digital world.
Accent Obert is born by reclaiming the legacy of the .cat domain, the result of a civic mobilization that in 2005 positioned Catalan as the first non-state cultural community to be fully recognized on the internet. Today, Accent Obert projects the strength of this community —and of more than 113,000 active domains— toward a future where major technological changes open new opportunities for the Catalan language.

Accent Obert is presented as a civic infrastructure at the service of the Catalan-speaking community on the internet, beyond any administrative border in the physical world. With a recently renewed Board of Trustees , more representative of the civil society across the entire linguistic domain, its activity will be structured into four main areas:
- Defending digital rights, bringing a local perspective to major global debates, with initiatives such as the 4D program or the Alliance for the Digital Presence of Catalan,
- Promoting digital creation in Catalan, connecting talent and opportunities, with projects such as Llista and the CRIT Awards,
- Providing digital tools in Catalan, such as va.cat, ja.cat, jo.cat, and also through actions like the “Digitalitzem-nos” campaign, and
- Managing essential infrastructures, especially the .cat domain, as a collective asset for the country.
Four areas that converge toward the same horizon: making it possible to live fully in Catalan, including in the digital world.
A new institution to connect, influence, and transform
With this transformation, Accent Obert aims to take an active role in public debates where technology, language, and community intersect, becoming a reference voice in defending the linguistic and digital rights of Catalan speakers. Accent Obert seeks to become a catalyst for a digital ecosystem that is active and diverse, driving collaborative projects with different civil society actors who pursue the same goals.
