Who we are

Long before the internet was for everyone, we were already part of it.

At Accent Obert, we are proud heirs of the Fundació .cat, born from an extraordinary collective effort. In 2004, a group of pioneers stood up for an idea as simple as it was powerful: that Catalan deserves its place on the internet. That our language and culture could fully thrive in the digital age. That we are a community with a long history — and an even greater future.

That visionary idea sparked an unprecedented wave of civic support: dozens of organizations and more than 65,000 individuals joined forces to secure a dedicated domain for Catalan. Thanks to all of them, in 2005 ICANN officially recognized the .cat domain, as the first cultural domain in the world.

This marked the beginning of the journey of Fundació .cat, which would oversee the domain’s proper functioning and give life to a diverse and vibrant community — a community that today includes more than 113,000 individuals, businesses, and organizations with their own .cat domain.

Twenty years later, Accent Obert takes root in the legacy of that collective momentum that, for two decades, was embodied by Fundació .cat. It emerges to update that mission and expand it into new territories — beyond the domain itself. To continue upholding the belief that everyone should be able to live fully in Catalan, also in the digital sphere. And to defend, also in digital form, our way of being.
